How-to guide

How to sign a document on Mac

Mac has Preview built in, which lets you draw a signature on a PDF. It looks like an e-signature but has an important limitation: there's no audit trail. If a dispute ever arises, a Preview-inserted signature image is nearly impossible to verify. For contracts, NDAs, and anything with legal weight, InkRobin's web-based signing takes 90 seconds and produces a tamper-evident signed document.

How to sign a document on mac

  1. 01

Open the document in your browser

If you're sending a document you need to sign yourself, upload it to InkRobin at inkrobin.com. If someone sent you a signing link, open it in Safari or Chrome.

  2. 02

Place or click the signature field

If you're preparing the document, drag a signature field to the correct location on the PDF. If you're signing someone else's document, the signature field will already be marked.

  3. 03

    Sign using your trackpad

Click the signature field. In the signing panel, select 'Draw' and use your Mac trackpad to draw your signature. The larger the trackpad gesture, the smoother the result. Alternatively, type your name for a clean typeface signature.

  4. 04

    Complete any other required fields

Fill in date, initials, or text fields if the document requires them. InkRobin highlights unfilled required fields before letting you finish.

  5. 05

Download or share the signed PDF

Click Finish. The signed PDF is immediately available to download or share. The audit certificate, which records every event with timestamps, IP address, and a document hash, is attached as an exhibit to the signed PDF.

Pro tip

For documents you need to fill in and sign regularly (like invoices or service agreements), InkRobin Pro lets you save reusable templates. Upload once, send as many times as you need.

Questions

What's wrong with using Preview to sign PDFs on Mac?
Preview's signature feature inserts an image of your signature. It has no timestamp, no IP record, no document hash, and no way to prove the signature wasn't added after the fact. For personal documents it's fine; for legally significant documents, it's not.
Can I use Touch ID to verify a signature on Mac?
InkRobin uses email verification and a tamper-evident audit trail rather than biometric authentication. Touch ID verification is a different concept. An audit trail with signer email, IP, and document hash is what courts and contracts actually require.
What file formats does InkRobin support?
InkRobin supports PDF. If your document is a Word file, Pages document, or other format, export it to PDF first. File → Print → Save as PDF works on any Mac application.
