5 documents every freelancer should e-sign

1. Client contract (service agreement)

The document that defines scope, deliverables, payment schedule, revision rounds, and what happens if the project gets cancelled. Without it, 'this is more than I expected' is a conversation with no good ending. Get it signed before you start any work.

2. Non-disclosure agreement

Clients often share sensitive information (business strategies, financial data, unreleased products) before a project is confirmed. An NDA signed before those conversations protects the client and signals that you take confidentiality seriously. A 1-page mutual NDA takes two minutes to sign.

3. Change order

When scope expands mid-project (and it always does), a signed change order documents the new work, price, and timeline. It keeps projects from growing invisibly and ensures you get paid for the extra work. Many freelancers use a templated change order that they fill in and send for signature in minutes.

4. Subcontractor agreement

If you bring in other freelancers to help with a project, you need a subcontractor agreement. It defines their deliverables, timeline, pay, and, critically, who owns the IP. Without it, the IP question can become a serious problem if you're supposed to hand deliverables over to a client.

5. Invoice acknowledgment

Not every invoice needs a signature. But for large milestones or clients who have disputed invoices before, a signed acknowledgment ('I confirm receipt of this invoice for the described deliverables') gives you something concrete if payment is delayed and you need to escalate.
